Cover for Acute CTA for Thrombectomy in Stroke (ACTATS)

Acute CTA for Thrombectomy in Stroke (ACTATS)

ACTATS launched on 07 May 2020 in anticipation of Scotland’s nation-wide thrombectomy service starting up. In the past month, 702 users have registered. 27 have completed all training components, which makes them eligible for 7 CPD credits, in accordance with the CPD Scheme of the Royal College of Radiologists.

Registration is free thanks to the support of Medtronic & NHS National Services Scotland. The training tool consists of three didactic lectures, with MCQs to test learning from the didactic lectures; a series of 30 validated, plain CT & CTA stroke cases for practice; a five question feedback survey to help us improve the training tool; & a certificate of completion.

ACTATS is suitable for any radiologists or stroke physicians worldwide, who have an interest in improving their CTA evaluation & interpretation skills. We encourage anyone involved with thrombectomy & imaging to enrol & to complete the training.

Our friends at the UK Neurointerventional Group (UKNG) have launched their new website: https://ukng.org.uk

The UKNG Annual Meeting will take place virtually on 26th June.

President’s Statement

Dear colleagues and friends,

I sincerely hope everyone in the Neuroradiology community remains healthy and adequately protected by having been enabled to work substantially off-site and provided with appropriate software, ways of working and PPE when on-site. Our president elect, Dr Danny Birchall has helpfully set up lines of communication for sharing experiences through Neuroradiology team leaders at each Neuroscience Centre and if there is any way the BSNR can lend its weight to enabling departments to adapt individual workplaces at this time, let Danny or me know. I will be passing the Presidency over to Danny in the Autumn.

It will come as no surprise to learn that the annual BSNR meeting planned for September 2020 in London has had to be postponed until Autumn 2021 with the planned programme of annual meetings all having to be pushed back a year. Liverpool will therefore become the host of the 2022 meeting etc. The Trainee Symposia have also had to be put on hold for the year but these will restart as soon as we are allowed and possibly with greater frequency to maintain the momentum of the rolling curriculum.

The Executive Committee has been working on a proposal to apply to the Charities Commission to change our status to a Foundation Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO). We were planning to ask the membership to vote on this at the annual meeting but as that has now been postponed, we will be contacting you electronically to consult, comment and vote on the amendment in due course. Please engage with this communication when it arrives as it will have a considerable impact on the health of the Society in the coming years.

It is a great shame we will not be able to share our research, knowledge and friendship this year on the 50th anniversary of the first BSNR meeting but I encourage you all to resolve to attend the celebratory meeting in 2021 and make it a resounding success. Until then, we send our very best wishes to you all from the BSNR.

Norman McConachie

BSNR President

Unfortunately due to the current pandemic the BSNR has decided that it would not be appropriate to hold our trainee symposium in June. The event is postponed and we will update with more details about the reorganised days in the future. We hope everyone stays safe and well during this difficult time.

Trainee Representative

Position: BSNR Standards Subcommittee Trainee Representative

Deadline for application: 9th March 2020

Frequency of meetings: Roles involve meetings roughly 3-4 times a year either at the RCR in London or at the BSNR annual conference. Meetings lasting up to 2 hours. Refreshment provided. Travel expenses can be claimed.

What we do: The mission of the subcommittee is the production of Neuroradiology standards documents that can be referred to by those in Neuroradiology but also non-specialists who may need official guidance (i.e. Neurologist/Neurosurgeons for aneurysm screening advice, Radiologists for neuroimaging scanning protocols, Health commissioners for standards of staffing and scan services for health service planning). Some of these standards documents are produced as collaborative efforts with UKNG and RCR. There may be additional roles to volunteer for as the BSNR committees may get invites to other groups i.e. NICE.

A varied representation is encouraged on the committee with a mix of diagnostic and interventional neuroradiologists from around the country with a committee roughly around 10 members.

What your work entails:

The role of the trainee representative is:

a) Trainee viewpoint on the production of these documents and opportunity to help draft these alongside the consultants.

b) Exposure to committee duties which may serve as a CV builder and experience when sitting on committees in the future (at hospital or specialty levels)

c) Opportunity to network with the consultants

How to get involved:

Email your expression of interest to Dr Summers, Chair of the BSNR Standards Subcommittee (david.summers@ed.ac.uk) containing

a) A short paragraph of why you would like to participate in this opportunity

b) Attached CV

Neurodegeneration and metabolic/toxic disorders

It will provide one day of intensive Neuroradiology teaching, as part of the 2-year BSNR rolling programme.
